Game over -- Pirates win, 8-6

posted by David Cloninger, 5/31/2009 08:43:00 PM

Jackie Bradley Jr. leads off against Kevin Brandt, who has pitched a beauty. Just a suggestion, but TAKE.

Bradley Jr. works a 2-0, then 2-1. He drives the next pitch over short and is aboard with a single. Need a lot more of those.

Nick Ebert up. Closer Seth Simmons is warming up for the Pirates.

2-1 on Ebert, then 2-2 on a way-out-in-front swing. Full count on the next pitch.

Outside offspeed, Ebert swings and doesn't touch it. What has happened to him?

One out, one on for Justin Dalles. "Let's Go Pirates!" is in until Dalles twirls his bat and SMOKES one well outta here to left. That is long gone, almost to the street, and it's 8-4 Pirates. He has had one heck of a regional.

That's going to be it for Brandt. Simmons coming in.

Andrew Crisp in with one out. He's quickly down two strikes. He swings and bounces it up the middle and no one's going to get that. Crisp aboard with a single.

Adam Matthews up after being robbed of a homer the last time up. First-pitch swing and the third baseman charges. Going to have to hurry, the third baseman bobbles it and can't make the throw. Matthews safe at first, Crisp on at second.

Bobby Haney up with two on and one out. Tying run is in the on-deck circle.

Chopper to deep short, again going to be tough and the shortstop can't get it! Bases loaded with one out and the tying run steps to the plate in the form of Brady Thomas, pinch-hitting for Scott Wingo.

I know what all of you are thinking in relation to last week. Let me tell you now, STOP IT.

Visit to the mound. Simmons will stay out there.

Thomas swings on the first pitch and it's down the first-base line and through! Two runs score, it's 8-6 and there's two runners in scoring position.

One out for Whit Merrifield. Ray Tanner out to talk to him.

Tanner going to pinch-run for Thomas ... with SAM DYSON. No, that's not a joke. Boy, the bench is getting thin.

Ball one, low, bounces away but not far enough to score. Strike one.

Ball two, outside. Strike two in, Merrifield takes a great cut and hits it hard and foul to left. 2-2.

Merrifield swings and pops it up. First baseman over in foul territory, caught. Two down.

Jeffery Jones going to pinch-hit. Ball one, low. Ball two, low.

Strike one, inside.

Jones swings and pops up to shallow center. Under it, caught, rally over.

The winner-take-all game is at 6 p.m. tomorrow. It's just a guess, but I'd say Jay Brown will start for USC. Don't know who will start for ECU -- all of their starters have thrown.
